Manchester United goalkeeper Lee Grant has backed Man City’s rumoured transfer interest in Danny Ings.

Lee Grant said: “I think it would be a wonderful move for Danny. He’s obviously proven now over the last couple of years that he’s got that ability to play at that high level and ply his trade at one of the bigger clubs. He’s absolutely got that ability and it would be a wonderful move for Danny. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were other clubs in for him as well, especially with his contract situation being as it is currently.”

Whilst Ings may not be the most high-profile forward that City could sign, Grant argued the former Liverpool striker’s record speaks for itself.

Lee Grant said: “If you have a look at his back catalogue of goals, he’s proven to score such a wide variety and even how he brings other players into the game as well with his assists. It’s the type of goals and forward play we see from really elite strikers. If you take Man City as an example, the types of goals they score in and around the box, Danny would certainly fit into that mould.”

Yet Grant warned that Ings’ nature means a new contract at Southampton cannot be ruled out completely.

Lee Grant said: “The thing that stood out was his personality, his perseverance and his general good nature. You could just tell he was proper, proper human being and a real top professional. I would say, knowing Danny as I know him, the way Southampton have treated him, with the trust they showed in him after his injury record at Liverpool, will certainly be weighing on his mind. So I wouldn’t be surprised to see something happen, especially when you see the type of offer and contract Southampton are willing to put on the table for him.”

Danny Ings  has just over a year left on his contract at the Saints, meaning they will be under pressure to sell him this summer if he did not sign a new deal.
