Allan Saint-Maximin has opened up about life at Newcastle United and his goals for the season.
Allan Saint-Maximin said “It’s good, because it’s the way I play, I’m really happy to give this to the supporters, because sometimes it’s hard because we are in the Premier League, the best league in the world, and I don’t have too (much of the) ball. But every time I have the ball, I try to do something, because it’s the way I play. I miss the fans a lot. To be honest, it’s really, really hard for me, because last season, you play in a stadium with 50,000 people who are crying your name and pushing you. It’s so different when you go to the stadium and you feel it’s like a friendly game. I hope they come back soon.”
Saint-Maximin also admitted as much as he likes to be a goal threat for Newcastle , he is as happy to play the role of provider.
Allan Saint-Maximin said “To be honest, I really like to give assists,” he said. “I don’t know why but I really like to give assists, because I like to give, so I have a really great feeling when I give an assist to some player and make the season of this player better, you know? For me, it’s really good if I can make 10 or 15 assists to Callum (Wilson). Even if I don’t score a lot of goals, I’m really happy because I know it can be really good for him and even for me, it’s good. Against Manchester, I only had one shot and one cross, so if your shot doesn’t go in the goal, sometimes it will be a difficult game. That’s why we try to work hard and I think we started good. We just have to keep going. I just have to keep going and do my best for the team, so they can be in a better position.”
Saint-Maximin arrived at Newcastle from Nice last year – and admitted it is tough moving abroad.
Allan Saint-Maximin said “Some people cannot understand but when you change a country and you go to England or maybe Spain, or anywhere, it’s really, really hard. That’s why I try to do my best and when you have the love from the fans, from the club, it can give you the opportunity to feel much better.”
The 23-year-old winger is pleased to be thrilling the Newcastle fans with his attacking play but – with matches still bring played behind closed doors due to the coronavirus pandemic – just wishes they could be there to see his exploits in person. The Frenchman has been a key danger man for the Magpies in the early part of the 2020-21 campaign, building on an impressive first year with the club.
Newcastle have taken seven points from their opening five Premier League fixtures. They visit Wolverhampton Wanderers tomorrow (Sunday) as they look to bounce back from a 4-1 home defeat to Manchester United last time out.
