Watford boss Roy Hodgson has praised his backline for keeping a clean sheet in the 0-0 draw against Burnley. Up to this point in the season – under two managers in Xisco Munez and Claudio Ranieri – the Hornets had conceded in every single league game they’d played. Speaking to the press after the game,

Roy Hodgson said: “I’m very satisfied with the team’s performance, I thought they worked really really hard. This is a notoriously difficult venue. The wind and the rain didn’t help. Burnley have a lot of players, very good players, so it was a bit of a baptism of fire and I think they stood up to it very well.”

In a game that lacked quality, both teams did have chances to win it – with Burnley hitting the bar, and Watford having an effort cleared off the line – but in the end, the former England boss seemed content with the point.

Roy Hodgson said: “I certainly think it would have been very harsh had we lost the game, and as a result, I think one has to be very satisfied with the point.”

Speaking in particular about the partnership at the back of Craig Cathcart and Samir, Hodgson suggested he would be keen to continue with the duo with West Ham to play as soon as Tuesday.

Roy Hodgson said: “After their performance today, it would be very hard to leave them out. After what they did today, I’m very very satisfied with them. If there is one club that’s blessed with depth in centre-backs it’s us, but I chose to play with Cathcart and Samir and I’m very happy with the way they went about their business.”
