Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp admits he forgot how many goals Aston Villa scored against his side last season as he spoke to the media following the 5-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford. The German claimed that his side have made great strides in recovering from the shock 7-2 defeat they took at Villa Park 12 months ago.

Jurgen Klopp said:  “It’s special, it’s really special. But now is not the moment for me at least to celebrate like crazy because of respect for the opponent. Three points is most important against a proper, proper competitor and that’s how it is and that’s how it will stay. Confidence of course is clear but you have to understand these games right, you have to. We lost once against Aston Villa I don’t know seven-nil, eight, whatever, I forget these things pretty quickly. You have to learn off it, then we smashed Crystal Palace once with a similar result, I’m not saying that it’s the same situation but you have to understand the game, we have to analyse the game. I cut the goals off and analyse the game so the result is not interesting to analyse.”

Liverpool thrashed their rivals United at Old Trafford as Mohamed Salah scored a hat-trick to take his tally for the campaign across all competitions to 15 goals. Naby Keita and Diogo Jota opened the scoring for Liverpool as Klopp’s side stormed into a 4-0 lead before half-time. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s United failed to find a response as Liverpool added a fifth in the second half, while Paul Pogba saw red for a foul on Keita despite only being introduced into the action after the interval.
