Martin O’Neill’s claims to succeed Brian Clough at Nottingham Forest increased dramatically after Forest Chairman Fred Reacher gave a strong hint that the club’s next manager would have a City Ground connection. O’Neill had a big advantage over the likes of Dario Gradi who collected a league title and European Cup during Clough’s golden years at Forest.

Fred Reacher said “Brian is manager until the end of the season and we are certainly not going to rush into making an appointment. I have always been a firm believer in continuity and it would be ab obvious advantage to appoint someone who knows the set up within the club.”
