Graeme Souness set a top six place as a goal for his reborn Liverpool side. The Reds had never finished lower since 1965 and Souness had every intention of preserving that proud record in a season which the threat of relegation was only weeks away. A victory over Leeds later that day would lift Liverpool in the fifth place, which would be as remarkable as it would be respectable.

Graeme Souness said “We have to give of our best in the ramaining games, starting tonight. There’s a lot of pride at stake. I certainly don’t want to be associated with a team that finishes in the lowest position for so many years, finishing in the top six has to be our aim. The squad here is good enough to be competing for the honours.”
