Blackburn manager Kenny Dalglish had been told that he’ll have to wait to sign Tim Flowers – until Southampton had found a suitable replacement for the England goalkeeper. Dalglish had bid a record-breaking £2.2 million in cash for Flowers – as opposed to a rival bid from Liverpool, that included a pick from Bruce Grobbelaar or David James in part player exchange.

Saints boss Ian Branfoot preferred the Rovers offer of hard cash, but had discounted any possibility of the deal being completed before the weekend. Robbing Saints of Flowers’ services for the game against Newcastle.

Ian Branfoot said ‘’Sorry Blackburn, sorry Tim but there is no deal until it is right for us. Blackburn have been talking to our chairman but they are getting the same answer.’’
