Robbie Fowler and Neil Ruddock struck in the last two minutes to hand the Reds a late, late win. Goal-shy Liverpool had looked set to continue their miserable run of Premiership results when Dareen Beckford struck after 74 minutes. The Reds fielding the same side which had smashed five goals past Fulham in its previous outing had struggled to find their cutting edge against one of the weakest defences in the league.

But just when Graeme Souness’s men looked to be heading for a shock defeat, up stepped Fowler and Ruddock to pull off an amazing escape act. Bernard, twice and Beckford twice missed early chances for an Oldham team which gave Rick Holden his debut following his recent move from Manchester City.
