Dundee United had banished their £2.5 million rated striker Duncan Ferguson on to an indefinite period of reserve team duty. The club’s board blamed a form lapse to Ferguson’s breaches of club rules. The Scotland player had refused to accept a £100 fine and his lawyers had threatened to go to courts over the same.

Dundee felt that its star had been tapped up by a prospective buyer. Scottish giants Rangers and premier league clubs like Arsenal, Crystal Palace, Southampton, and Everton were all interested in the player.
