Aston Villa Chairman Doug Ellis welcomed the FA premier league’s £12 million sponsorship deal with brewers Brass amid talk of a top-flight row. Ellis said that the fact a brewery was backing the premier league would have no effect on the negotiations over Villa’s Shirt sponsor next season.

Aston Villa Chairman Doug Ellis said “As far as Aston Villa are concerned, I can’t see there being any conflict of interest. We are in talks with many parties over the new shirt deal from next season.”

From 1993 onwards the premier league would be called the FA carling premier league prompting suggestions that the deal would cause a conflict of interest with clubs who are already sponsored by rival brewers.
