Pep Guardiola
In a surprising turn of events, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola made a significant decision to rotate his squad for their Champions League clash against Bayer Leverkusen. The bold move saw Guardiola make ten changes to his starting lineup, a decision that ultimately backfired as City succumbed to a 2-0 defeat at the Etihad Stadium. This marked their first home group stage loss in seven years, sparking debates over the wisdom of such extensive rotation.
Bajkowski said: “I’ve got three theories. The first is that it was a message to his starters from Newcastle saying ‘look, I wasn’t entirely happy with that performance, it has got to be better and here is a chance for 10 people to show you why you won’t necessarily be in my team every week’. None of them took it. It is still in its infancy this new phase, and I think he thought against a Bayer Leverkusen team missing a load of players, even if they got a point, even if they lost, 16 points got you top eight last season.”
Bajkowski continued: “So even if they lose to Real, if they beat Bodo and Galatasaray, which they should, then you will get to 16 points. And I think he thought he could take an opportunity to rest players. But it massively backfired and now we are not talking about a City team who can challenge Arsenal, we are talking about a City team who are inconsistent and are they good enough?”
Despite the introduction of key players like Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki in the latter stages of the match, City struggled to make an impact against a well-organized Leverkusen side. The defeat has raised questions about City’s current form and their ability to compete at the highest level, especially with the Premier League title race heating up.
Guardiola’s decision to rotate his squad was seen as a strategic move to rest key players amidst a congested fixture schedule. However, the loss has highlighted the challenges of maintaining consistency while managing player fatigue. The result has left City in a precarious position in their Champions League group, with crucial matches against Real Madrid, Bodo, and Galatasaray still to come.
As the debate over Guardiola’s team selection continues, the focus now shifts to how Manchester City will respond in their upcoming fixtures. The pressure is mounting on Guardiola to find the right balance between squad rotation and maintaining a winning momentum.
