David Moyes
Everton manager David Moyes has provided crucial updates on the injury status of several key players as the team navigates through a challenging period. The Blues are currently facing a shortage in midfield due to injuries and suspensions, which has prompted Moyes to consider potential squad adjustments in the upcoming transfer window.
David Moyes said: “I’m really happy with how Harrison is doing. I think Preston would be hugely disappointed if we took him back. But he’s also got an injury at the moment as well, he’s been out for the last few games with an injury at Preston but hopefully he’s due back very shortly. We’ll consider it in January. But I think at the moment him getting the games at the age he’s at and where he’s performing and Preston hopefully will have a really good chance of making the play-offs and I think for him it’s a good level to be playing at.”
Moyes expressed satisfaction with Harrison Armstrong’s performance on loan at Preston North End, despite Armstrong currently being sidelined with an injury. The manager emphasized the importance of Armstrong gaining match experience at Preston, which he believes is beneficial for the player’s development. Moyes mentioned the possibility of recalling Armstrong in January, depending on the team’s needs and Armstrong’s recovery progress.
Moyes said: “We are light in midfield. Merlin having an operation has left us light, so we are quite short, but we’ve got other people who can play in there like Charly Alcaraz and Dwight McNeil if we need to as well. Overall, the four midfield players that we had, Merlin is probably not going to be back until the start of January and Idrissa’s absence keeps us short in that area.”
The Everton manager also addressed the current midfield crisis, highlighting the absence of Idrissa Gueye due to suspension and his upcoming participation in the Africa Cup of Nations. Additionally, Merlin Rohl, a recent transfer deadline day acquisition, is recovering from a hernia operation and is expected to return in January. Moyes noted that the team is exploring alternative options, such as utilizing Charly Alcaraz and Dwight McNeil, to fill the midfield gap temporarily.
Moyes said: “Seamus has got a small injury. We don’t think it’s too bad but he just felt his hamstring early in the game, which was really disappointing from his point of view and ours. Jarrad is still on the way back and Patto as well.”
In addition to midfield concerns, Moyes provided updates on other injured players, including club captain Seamus Coleman, who sustained a hamstring injury during Everton’s recent victory over Manchester United. Moyes expressed optimism about Coleman’s recovery, describing the injury as minor. Meanwhile, long-term injury victims Jarrad Branthwaite and Nathan Patterson are still in the recovery process.
Everton fans will be keenly watching the team’s performance and Moyes’ strategic decisions as they aim to navigate these injury challenges and maintain their competitive edge in the league.
