Steven Gerrard Manager
Liverpool’s recent 4-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League has drawn sharp criticism from former captain Steven Gerrard. The Reds’ defensive frailties were exposed at Anfield, leading to a significant backlash from pundits and fans alike. Gerrard, speaking on TNT Sport, did not hold back in his assessment of Liverpool’s backline, which he described as “not a Liverpool back four.”
Steven Gerrard said: “The substitution of [Ibrahima] Konate was huge, that sends a story. You look at the back four that you finish with: Curtis Jones, [Ryan] Gravenberch, [Virgil] van Dijk and [Milos] Kerkez. That’s not a Liverpool back four, never will be.”
Gerrard’s comments came after Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, made a tactical change by substituting Konate for Federico Chiesa following PSV’s third goal. Despite the change, Liverpool’s defense continued to struggle, conceding a fourth goal in added time. The defeat added to Liverpool’s recent woes, having also lost 3-0 to Manchester City and 4-2 to Aston Villa, before a 4-4 draw with Chesterfield in the League Cup. Their return to league action was marked by a defeat to Wimbledon at Anfield.
Steven Gerrard also stated: “No, it’s not [acceptable], they’re conceding too many goals, they’re wide open, they’re vulnerable and unstable. Anfield tells a story; the seats are empty.”
Liverpool’s defensive issues have become a recurring theme this season, with the team struggling to maintain stability at the back. The pressure is mounting on the players and management to address these vulnerabilities, especially with the increasing number of live Premier League games being broadcasted, including those on Sky and Amazon Prime.
Arne Slot said to TNT Sport: “The last weeks, it’s the same question every time. The emotion is all very negative and disappointing. I have to be, I want to be positive about the reaction of the players after we went 1-0 down because, until half-time, we played a very good game. After another disappointment, we came back into the game. I think we had enough chances, maybe, to go 2-1 up, and at half-time, I don’t think anyone would have expected us to lose this game 4-1.”
Slot’s comments reflect a desire to remain optimistic despite the recent setbacks. He highlighted the team’s ability to create chances and their performance in the first half as positives to build upon. However, the early concession of goals in the second half and the inability to capitalize on scoring opportunities remain areas of concern.
Liverpool’s current form is a stark contrast to their historical defensive solidity, and the team will need to regroup quickly to avoid further disappointments. With a demanding schedule ahead, the focus will be on tightening the defense and restoring confidence among the players and supporters.
