Liverpool have found themselves in the bottom half of the Premier League table following a series of disappointing performances. The team has suffered 3-0 defeats in three of their last five matches, prompting captain Virgil van Dijk to call for accountability among players. In response, Cody Gakpo has revealed that internal discussions have taken place to address the team’s current form and to strategize a path forward.
Cody Gakpo said: “We know they are here to help us in every tough situation but we have to give them something back as well, so that was not a good feeling. In the days after that, I don’t want to say ‘angry’, but we tried to speak together and really to be honest with each other (about) what we have to do to perform better on the pitch. We also know we have to stick together to put in good performances and get wins. Everybody is aware we have to take responsibility on and off the pitch. This was a conversation you have with a team-mate, it wasn’t really a ‘meeting’ meeting, but we are aware we have to take responsibility. That’s what we spoke about, we are honest because otherwise there’s no point in speaking.”
Gakpo continued: “I don’t know where it’s gone but we should try to get back to that. We know we are in a difficult position. We have to stick together and that’s what we try to do on and off pitch, mentally and performance wise. It’s not been the best of streaks and we have to fight through that. We know we are capable of doing it as we have shown some good performances like that (Real Madrid) but have to keep fighting. Most important is we stick together no matter what happens. We demand more from each other as we have to perform better that’s what the club and fans deserve. We are being honest with each other that some things have to improve to get back to that.”
Gakpo added: “It can be difficult (to ignore the outside noise). If you don’t want to read anything or get anything into your head it’s almost not possible nowadays with social media and online. But if we are together in the dressing room we can get confidence from each other. We can get better if we do that.”
Liverpool’s recent performances have been a cause for concern, especially considering their previous successes. The team’s only notable comeback this season was during their 5-1 victory at Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League, where they initially fell behind. Gakpo’s comments highlight a collective awareness within the squad of the need to improve both on and off the pitch. The emphasis on honesty and unity suggests a determination to turn their fortunes around. The players are aware of the expectations from both the club and their fans, and they are committed to meeting those demands through improved performances.
