Morgan Rogers
Aston Villa’s recent match at Elland Road showcased Morgan Rogers’ remarkable performance, helping his team secure a vital victory against Leeds United. Despite a challenging first half, Villa managed to turn the game around in the second half, largely due to Rogers’ contributions.
Rogers said on BBC Match of the Day: “Luckily, we managed to find two goals in the second half to win the game, which is the most important thing. Of course, we want to play better with pretty football, but you can’t always do that in the Premier League. Different teams pose different problems. We were really good with grit and determination, and we got the win. We played a lot quicker with more intensity [in the second half] and tried to hurt them more. In the first half, we didn’t really cause that many problems, but in the second half we definitely did. We played a lot quicker and a lot more forward. That definitely helps, but normally it’s about our heart and our spirit to win. It was a difficult win; they pushed us right to the limit.”
Rogers’ decisive free-kick, which he humorously dubbed “the Emi Buendia,” was a highlight of the match. His execution of the set-piece was reminiscent of Buendia’s skill, which Rogers acknowledged as an inspiration.
Speaking of his free-kick, Rogers said: “I call it the Emi Buendia. He did it in the last game before the break. It’s something I’ve been practising, probably not as hard as him or as much as I should. Once he was off the pitch, I looked around and there was nobody else that really practised them, so I thought, ‘why not?’ I know I’ve got them in the locker. It’s about consistency.”
The match began with Emi Buendia in the starting lineup, but he was substituted at half-time, paving the way for Rogers to take center stage. Rogers first equalized with a deft flick from Donyell Malen’s cross and later sealed the victory with his expertly taken free-kick. His performance exemplified the resilience and adaptability required in the Premier League, as Villa overcame a strong Leeds side that played with high intensity.
Aston Villa’s victory at Elland Road was not only a testament to Rogers’ individual brilliance but also highlighted the team’s collective grit and determination. The win was crucial for Villa as they continue to navigate the challenges of the Premier League season.
