Alexander Isak
Swedish international Alexander Isak’s move to Liverpool from Newcastle United for a British record fee of £125 million has not gone as planned. Since joining the Reds on transfer deadline day in September, Isak has faced numerous challenges, including fitness and injury issues, which have limited his impact on the pitch. The 26-year-old striker has scored just once in eight appearances, and his transition to Anfield has been further complicated by a lack of pre-season preparation, as he trained alone to force a move from Newcastle. Despite these setbacks, former Arsenal player Nacho Monreal has expressed confidence in Isak’s ability to overcome these challenges and prove his worth at Liverpool.
Nacho Monreal said: “It’s been very difficult for Alexander [Isak]. He clearly wanted to go to Liverpool at the start of the summer transfer window. The fact it didn’t happen until right at the end meant he didn’t get a pre-season which has clearly had a big impact on his fitness. He’s not at his top level yet and still needs minutes on the pitch to get up to that top, top level but when he gets there, I have no doubt he’ll prove he’s one of the best strikers in the Premier League. He has done it for Newcastle over the last few seasons and he’s going to do the same for Liverpool. I’ve seen first-hand how much quality he has and it’s just a matter of time before he shows it in a red shirt. In my opinion, he’s a brilliant signing for Liverpool. He needs time to get fit but when that happens, people will see what he can do. They paid a lot of money for him, but I don’t think you can say he’s a waste of money or anything like that.”
Isak’s journey at Liverpool has been marred by a series of unfortunate events, starting with his decision to train independently during the summer to expedite his transfer. This lack of a proper pre-season has significantly affected his match fitness, as highlighted by Monreal. Isak’s situation was further exacerbated when he was forced off at half-time during Liverpool’s victory over Eintracht Frankfurt, leading to a four-match absence. Although he returned to the squad as an unused substitute in Liverpool’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, the striker is yet to regain full match fitness.
Monreal’s comments underscore the importance of patience and time for Isak to reach his full potential. The Spaniard emphasized that Isak’s quality is undeniable, having witnessed it during his time at Newcastle. Monreal believes that once Isak overcomes his fitness issues, he will demonstrate his value to Liverpool and silence his critics. The striker’s hefty transfer fee has drawn scrutiny, but Monreal remains confident that Isak will justify the investment and become one of the Premier League’s top strikers.
As Liverpool navigates the challenges of integrating Isak into their squad, the focus remains on ensuring the striker regains his fitness and confidence. The club and its supporters are hopeful that Isak will soon showcase the talent that prompted Liverpool to make him a record signing.
