Sunderland AFC is intensifying its preparations as several players are set to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) next month. Among the players, Simon Adingra is expected to be part of the Ivory Coast squad, although he was absent from their recent friendlies. This situation presents an intriguing opportunity for Sunderland, as Adingra remains on Wearside during the international break, allowing him to focus on club commitments.
Régis Le Bris said: “We didn’t speak directly with his [national team] manager, but he decided to keep him in his club. At one point, it was positive for us because we still had to work with Simon. He did well when he came on against Arsenal. I think it was important for him after a long period. So, [it shows] he’s still connected [with us]. He still has to work. He’s a really young player, once again even if he had a good experience with Brighton. So, for us, it’s still better to keep the player and work with them.”
Adingra’s involvement at Sunderland comes after a promising performance against Arsenal, marking his first appearance since the early substitution in the 2-0 defeat to Manchester United. Le Bris emphasized the importance of Adingra’s continued development with the team, highlighting the benefits of his presence during this period.
Le Bris confirmed: “We are working step by step, after every game we have some different variations in our dynamic. Now we have good news with Dennis, Romaine and Leo. Luke has been on the bench, Dan too. We have the depth to manage this period and these players will have their opportunities. They haven’t played in the Premier League before but we are confident. They know the system and are really well connected, so for me I am confident.”
Sunderland’s director of football, Florent Ghisolfi, is actively coordinating with national teams to finalize the departure dates for the club’s AFCON-bound players. It is anticipated that the players will leave after Sunderland’s match against Newcastle United. Le Bris expressed confidence in the squad’s depth and the readiness of players who have yet to feature in the Premier League.
Le Bris also said: “For Habib and for our players in general, it’s really important to take care of his health. His rehab is in progress and we are in a good place but we don’t want to rush the process because we need him in his best shape in the second half of the season. If it’s too early [for AFCON] and we could damage his health we won’t take risks.”
The fitness of Habib Diarra remains a concern, as his potential participation in the AFCON and the upcoming Newcastle United clash is uncertain. Le Bris reiterated the priority of player health, ensuring Diarra’s rehabilitation progresses without undue haste, aiming for his optimal performance in the latter half of the season.
As Sunderland navigates the challenges posed by the AFCON, the club remains committed to maximizing its squad’s potential while ensuring player welfare.
