Mathew Hayden
Mathew Hayden, playing as a wing-back for Brighton’s Under-21s, made a significant impact in their recent match, showcasing his attacking prowess. Although primarily listed as a defender, Hayden’s performance in a more advanced role was instrumental in securing a win for his team. His run and cross set up Aiden West’s decisive header just before the half-hour mark, highlighting his potential as a versatile player for the club.
Shannon Ruth said: “Matt is a player that has been with us since under-11 or under-12. He’s a full-back by trade, but he’s very athletic. He has done very well recently. He played in the Luton game, played in the Cambridge game for a similar role. He has been in our system a little while. He can play out wide or as a centre-forward. But, as you see, he’s a good profile. He’s a handful and I thought he took his goal really well.”
Ruth said: “Again a tough test. We gave some more young players a flavour of the Sussex Senior Cup. We had control for probably the majority of the game.”
Hayden’s development is a testament to Brighton’s academy’s effective pathways, having recently experienced the physical demands of Southern League football on loan. This exposure has evidently contributed to his growth, as evidenced by his dynamic play in the match. The Under-21s, led by head coach Shannon Ruth, fielded a youthful lineup that delivered an attractive brand of football, much to the delight of the 853 spectators in attendance. Despite the team’s youth, they managed to avoid the late-game pressure that had challenged them in previous rounds, demonstrating maturity and control throughout the match.
Brighton’s lineup for the game included Dike, Alakiu, Mackley, T. Ferdinand, Anah, Brennan, Hayden, A. Palmer, B. Palmer, Cullinane, and West. Substitutes such as Morby, Newham-Reeve, Crutchett, and Oppong also featured during the match, contributing to the team’s overall performance.
