Carlos Baleba
Manchester United’s interest in Carlos Baleba, the promising young midfielder from Brighton, has been a topic of considerable discussion. Despite Baleba’s apparent eagerness to join the ranks at Old Trafford, a formal bid from United never materialized. The primary obstacle appears to be the 21-year-old’s hefty price tag, which Brighton set after signing him for approximately £23 million in 2023. With Brighton currently positioned eleventh in the Premier League, just two points behind Manchester United, the transfer dynamics are intriguing. Baleba’s contract with Brighton extends until 2028, with an option for an additional year, giving the club a strong negotiating position.
Paul Dickov said: “I didn’t really think he was worth £110 million in the summer, really, but he’s a wonderful player. He’s still a very young boy. Sometimes with the speculation and the pressure surrounding him in the summer, it can affect players. You know, the last couple of games, he has been better, but he has struggled this season. Sometimes the price tag, that talk of going to clubs like United, Chelsea or wherever it may be, it can affect you. I think what he’s got to do is, first and foremost, concentrate on himself and try to get his form back to somewhere where it was because he was outstanding last season. But I’m not quite too sure about £110 million.”
Baleba’s potential move to Manchester United is further complicated by the presence of Casemiro, whose contract runs until 2026. The Brazilian’s recent resurgence on the pitch presents a dilemma for United’s manager, Ruben Amorim, as he considers future squad dynamics. Additionally, United’s reported interest in Elliot Anderson, a player with a similar profile to Baleba, suggests that the club is exploring multiple options to bolster their midfield. However, acquiring Anderson from Nottingham Forest would also require a significant financial commitment, with a price tag of at least £100 million.
As the season progresses, the ongoing negotiations and performances on the pitch will likely influence the final decisions. Manchester United and Brighton have already clashed this season, with Amorim’s side securing a 4-2 victory. The two teams are set to meet again in the final Premier League game week, potentially marking Baleba’s last appearance for Brighton against his prospective future club.
