Everton academy star Odin Samuels-Smith is making waves during his loan spell at National League North side Marine. The young defender, who joined Marine to gain his first taste of senior football, has been instrumental in the club’s recent upturn in form. His performances have not only impressed the coaching staff but have also been pivotal in Marine’s success, with the team winning five out of the seven matches he has featured in.
Grant said: “Samuels-Smith has been an absolute breath of fresh air. He is someone that has one million per cent got a bright future in the game. He is consistent, he has the ability to defend one v one situations, meaning we can push players further up the pitch, and he’s absolutely lightning fast. And he loves defending.”
Grant added: “I can’t give him any more praise and I think anyone around the football club, from the players and fans, right the way up to the board, all have the same opinion and to be able to do that in a space of four weeks shows how well he’s been doing at this club. He’s even brought that calmness in terms of playing the passes and getting forward now and choosing the right moments to go. The uncertainty was because he’s never been at this level and he’s been playing academy football – but as soon as we put him in at Worksop and he delivered after one training session, we thought ‘we’ve got a player here’. We’re delighted with him.”
Samuels-Smith’s impact at Marine has been profound, with his defensive prowess allowing the team to adopt a more attacking style. His speed and ability to handle one-on-one situations have provided the team with the flexibility to push forward, contributing to their recent victories. The young defender’s calmness and decision-making on the ball have also been highlighted as key attributes that have impressed both the coaching staff and the fans.
The teenager’s transition from academy football to senior-level competition has been seamless, showcasing his potential to have a successful career in football. His performances have not only been a testament to his talent but also to the effective development program at Everton’s academy. As Samuels-Smith continues to develop and gain experience, his future in the game looks exceptionally promising.
