Sunderland U21s are gearing up for a pivotal encounter against Sporting Lisbon in the International Cup, as they aim to solidify their position in Group D. Currently sitting second in the group, Graeme Murty’s side is determined to build on their impressive European form and advance to the knockout rounds, a feat they narrowly missed last season. A positive result against the Portuguese giants would bolster their campaign and sustain the momentum from a promising start to the season.
Graeme Murty said: “The players showed outstanding quality and application throughout the match. I think when you talk to anyone who’s in professional sport, they want to win. I want to win. I’m desperate to win. I’m desperate for our young players to do really well. I think you know me well enough to know that if we can get more opportunities for our young players to experience something like this, I think it would be a fantastic thing. The more time we get to actually work with them.”
The team selection for Thursday’s clash is a significant talking point, especially after several senior players contributed to the victory over a Spanish side. Luke O’Nien, Dan Neil, and Dennis Cirkin provided leadership and experience, which proved invaluable for the younger squad members. It remains uncertain whether Murty will once again call upon these first-team players, who were instrumental in securing Sunderland’s Premier League promotion last season.
In their previous outing, the young Sunderland side secured a 2–2 draw with Anderlecht, thanks to a late equalizer from 20-year-old striker Timur Tuterov. The Ukrainian forward has been in fine form, also netting the third goal in the win against Athletic Club. Alongside him, midfielder Ben Middlemas has emerged as a standout performer, providing crucial support in central areas. Murty praised both players for their performances and the responsibility they have taken on.
Murty continued: “They played alongside some really experienced players, but they have to be able to stand on their own two feet, and I think they showed they’re more than capable of doing that. And I don’t think it was just those two. We’ve got a group capable of making a step. Whoever makes that step isn’t down to us, but all the players can do is approach every game in the right manner. I thought they were exceptional at that.”
Looking ahead to the Sporting Lisbon match, Murty expressed the squad’s anticipation and excitement. Sporting Lisbon, known for producing elite academy talent such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Figo, Nani, and Ricardo Quaresma, presents a formidable challenge with their technical prowess. Despite being second last in the table due to games in hand, the Portuguese side is expected to test Sunderland’s young talents. The match is set to take place at the Stadium of Light, with kick-off scheduled for 7 pm.
