Thomas Frank
Tottenham Hotspur is grappling with a significant injury crisis as they prepare for the highly anticipated north London derby against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Head coach Thomas Frank, who is set to lead Spurs for the first time in this fierce rivalry, faces the daunting task of managing a squad severely impacted by fitness concerns.
Thomas Frank said: “We are searching to find the right balance up front and I think when we look at the game back, I think there was positive bits going forward. We constantly work on the relationship and try to improve it with the players and try to find what is exactly the right blend, but I think there were small steps in the right direction. (Against United) we wanted two strikers, Kolo Muani and Richarlison, for the crosses, which we thought was an area where we potentially could hurt United. I think it worked perfectly with the first one (by Brennan Johnson), where Richarlison got a big chance, so that could have been an unbelievable, fantastic game plan from us. So that was part of it and we need different personalities and types for different games.”
The injury list for Tottenham is extensive, with fitness concerns affecting as many as 13 players. The latest setback involves Pape Matar Sarr, who was forced off early during Senegal’s friendly against Brazil. Additionally, Lucas Bergvall’s concussion recovery has hit a snag, further depleting the midfield options. Archie Gray, Ben Davies, and Dominic Solanke were already sidelined before the international break, while James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, and Radu Dragusin are dealing with long-term injuries. Yves Bissouma and Kota Takai have yet to feature this season, adding to Frank’s selection woes.
Despite these challenges, Tottenham boasts the best away record in the Premier League this season, a silver lining as they head into the clash against league leaders Arsenal. Frank’s tactical adjustments have been instrumental in securing impressive away victories against Manchester City, West Ham, and Leeds. However, the manager acknowledges the need for further improvements, particularly in home performances.
The upcoming derby presents a critical test for Frank’s tactical acumen and the resilience of his squad. With Arsenal holding a four-point lead at the top of the table, Tottenham will need to harness their away form to challenge their rivals effectively. As Frank continues to refine the team’s attacking dynamics, the match promises to be a compelling encounter between two of the Premier League’s fiercest competitors.
