Erik ten Hag, the former Manchester United manager, has reportedly declined an offer to return to Ajax, amid growing speculation about John Heitinga’s future at the club. Ten Hag, who previously enjoyed a successful four-year tenure with the Amsterdam giants, expressed concerns over the club’s uncertain hierarchy following discussions with Ajax’s technical director, Ted Kroes.
Erik ten Hag said: “If there’s one thing I miss, it’s Old Trafford. We had many highs, but as I always say, there is always room for improvement. Good is not enough. You can do better.”
Ten Hag’s previous spell at Ajax was marked by notable success, including three Eredivisie titles and an impressive 73% win rate. However, after leaving Ajax in May 2022 to join Manchester United, Ten Hag’s journey took a challenging turn. Despite winning the Carabao Cup and FA Cup and securing a third-place finish in his first season, he was relieved of his duties at Old Trafford in October 2024.
Erik ten Hag said: “This summer, many key players who were part of past successes left the squad. Building a new, cohesive team is a careful process that requires both time and trust. A new coach deserves the space to implement his vision, set the standards, shape the squad and leave his mark on the style of play. I started this job with full conviction and energy, but unfortunately the management was not willing to grant me the time and trust I needed, which I deeply regret. I feel this was never a relationship based on mutual trust.”
After a nine-month hiatus, Ten Hag returned to management with Bayer Leverkusen, replacing Xabi Alonso. However, his tenure was short-lived, as he was dismissed after just three Bundesliga matches, having secured one win, one draw, and one loss. Ten Hag’s comments reflect his frustration with the lack of support and time to build a cohesive team at Leverkusen.
The Dutch manager’s decision to decline Ajax’s offer underscores his concerns about the club’s leadership and his desire for a stable environment to implement his vision. As Ten Hag navigates the next steps in his managerial career, his experiences at Manchester United and Bayer Leverkusen highlight the challenges of achieving long-term success in football management.
