Leeds United faced another setback as they succumbed to a 3-1 defeat against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground. Despite taking an early lead, Leeds could not maintain their advantage, allowing Forest to close the gap to just two points behind them. This defeat marks Leeds’ fourth loss in their last five games, raising concerns about their recent performances despite maintaining a point-per-game ratio that manager Daniel Farke aims for.
Daniel Farke said: “First of all, a mistake from the referee because I think he was the only one in the whole stadium who saw a foul from Anton Stach. Actually, it was a foul against him, and we would have had a good situation with a free kick in the opponent’s half. Why did he give a free kick to them? It would have never happened if he had played by the rules, if I’m honest.”
Mark Clattenburg explained: “Jarred Gillett, the referee, penalised Anton Stach for a foul on Neco Williams near the touchline, which then, from the free kick, led to Nottingham Forest scoring the second goal. I understand the frustration of the Leeds United coach, but it’s not a major mistake from the referee and could have easily been defended.”
The controversial incident that led to Forest’s second goal has been a focal point of discussion. Farke expressed his frustration over the referee’s decision to award a free kick against Anton Stach, which he believed was unjust. Former referee Mark Clattenburg, however, offered a different perspective, suggesting that while the decision was contentious, it was not a glaring error and could have been managed defensively by Leeds.
This defeat leaves Leeds United in a precarious position, as they struggle to find form and consistency. The team’s recent performances have not been encouraging, and Farke’s comments highlight the growing pressure on the squad to turn their fortunes around. As Leeds continue to search for answers, the focus will be on improving their defensive resilience and capitalizing on their scoring opportunities to regain momentum in the league.
