Thomas Tuchel
In preparation for the final two World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Albania, Harry Kane was the only specialist No.9 included in the squad. While Marcus Rashford is capable of playing centrally, Thomas Tuchel has indicated that he might explore Ollie Watkins’ potential in forthcoming friendlies scheduled for March. Tuchel’s strategy reflects a flexible approach to the forward line, aiming to maximize the attacking potential with the available players.
Thomas Tuchel said: “We don’t have this clear No.9 profile now behind Harry. But I think given different game scenarios, Anthony Gordon played there for Newcastle, Marcus Rashford plays there for Barcelona. In a game scenario where we find more space behind the last line this could be a very valid options with the speed. I think Phil (Foden) can play a very fluid No.9 for us in this camp. I think we have enough options to be dangerous. I think we will be able to create chances and convert them.”
Tuchel said: “He has the ability to arrive and score goals which a No.9 could score. He scores tap-ins, he scores one-touch tap-ins in and around the six-yard box which is very unusual. It seems sometimes an easy goal but to arrive in these positions with the right timing and at the right moment is a key strength and one of his outstanding qualities.”
Tuchel said: “No one needs to be nervous. We have a lot of good strikers. Ollie is one of them. We then opted for the option to give him this break to get treatment and to be back in full physical capacity in best shape and then fight for the place again in March.”
Tuchel’s comments suggest a tactical flexibility, with Phil Foden being considered for a role that blends the responsibilities of a No.9 and a No.10, particularly close to the opponent’s penalty area. Jude Bellingham is also seen as a versatile player capable of fulfilling a No.10 role while being a threat in the penalty box. Although neither Danny Welbeck nor Ollie Watkins were included among the seven forwards selected, Tuchel hinted at Watkins’ potential return, emphasizing the need for him to regain full fitness.
This approach highlights Tuchel’s confidence in his squad’s depth and versatility, aiming to adapt to various game scenarios. With the focus on creating and converting chances, the team is poised to capitalize on the speed and skill of its players, ensuring a robust attacking strategy in the absence of a traditional No.9 backup for Kane.
