Jamie Carragher, the former Liverpool player and now a pundit, has expressed his views on Everton’s current situation, emphasizing the need for the club to avoid another season battling relegation. Carragher believes that Everton’s priority should be to secure a campaign free from survival fights, which hinges on finding a player who can capitalize on the chances created for forwards Beto and Thierno Barry.
Carragher said: “They [Everton] weren’t at their best, of course they weren’t, in the second half. They have had a great start to the season, they were poor in the first half themselves, Everton were excellent and should have gone in two goals up.”
Carragher continued: “I mean, you can’t miss that at this level. I think David Moyes and Everton have brought Barry in in the summer for £30m, he’s got a good goal record, I think 14 goals [in Spain]… It makes you think that they are better and then you put the other one in for the next game.”
Assessing Everton’s priorities, Carragher said: “The big thing for Everton this season is to not be involved in a relegation scrap. Now they have got Fulham at the weekend, before the international break, and it is an important game to win – or definitely not to lose… I look at the teams in the bottom three, I look at Nottingham Forest and think they have got too many good players to end up getting relegated, I think the same about West Ham in terms of I think they will have a go in January transfer-wise. I am not saying Everton will go down, I don’t believe that at all, but they don’t want to be looking over their shoulder for the rest of the season.”
Everton’s recent match against Sunderland saw them dominate the first 30 minutes, taking the lead through Iliman Ndiaye and nearly extending it with Jack Grealish hitting the post. However, the game’s turning point came when Thierno Barry missed a close-range opportunity from a Grealish cross, which some have labeled as the “miss of the season.” This miss seemed to energize Sunderland, who equalized through Granit Xhaka’s deflected shot and dominated the second half, though they couldn’t find a winner.
Barry, a summer acquisition from Villarreal, has yet to score for Everton, while Beto has managed only two goals this season, with just one in the Premier League. Carragher’s comments underscore the need for Everton to find a reliable striker to convert their chances and ensure they don’t slip into a relegation battle.
Looking ahead, Everton faces Fulham in a crucial match before the international break. Carragher stressed the importance of securing a positive result to maintain distance from the relegation zone. With new ownership in place, Everton’s January transfer window could be pivotal in addressing their striking concerns and ensuring Premier League safety.
