Guglielmo Vicario
Nineteen-year-old Lucas Bergvall’s brief appearance in Tottenham Hotspur’s derby defeat to Chelsea was marred by an unfortunate incident. The young midfielder was accidentally struck on the head by a ball from Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, leading to a brief moment of disorientation. Despite the setback, Bergvall showed resilience by applauding the fans post-match. However, an incident involving a supporter required goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario to step in.
Guglielmo Vicario said: “In every environment there are very good people and some bad people. That doesn’t necessarily say that everyone is a bad person. But there are some bad people in every environment and I had to protect Lucas because he was a little bit emotional in that moment. It’s part of my experience to do that, and we can discuss it inside the dressing-room and not outside.”
Bergvall’s incident means he will miss Tottenham’s next two fixtures, including a crucial Champions League match against Copenhagen and a Premier League clash with Manchester United, as he undergoes concussion protocols. This absence adds to Tottenham’s challenges, particularly concerning their home form, which has been a source of frustration for fans.
Vicario continued: “It’s normal. I was a fan when I was a kid and going to the stadium I saw many of these things. Probably in Italy it’s also a little bit worse when you go, so I have big shoulders about that, it’s not a big problem. It’s like when you go to the theatre and you see a show and you don’t like it and you express your reactions, your feelings. The main thing is for us to concentrate on what we have to do on the pitch, because it’s on us to turn around the situation.”
Tottenham’s domestic home form has been inconsistent, leading to dissatisfaction among the fanbase, often expressed through boos during and after matches. The team has acknowledged their shortcomings, particularly following the loss to Chelsea, and is determined to improve.
Vicario added: “We have spoken. At the end, of course, everyone was disappointed. We had lost a London derby so everyone was really frustrated, and we get the reaction of the fans at the end of the game. They can express their pain and we were of course in a big pain situation so that’s across every stadium in the world, in Europe, in the UK. So we get the point. We were just disappointed with the result.”
With critical matches ahead, Tottenham will need to regroup and focus on delivering performances that meet the expectations of their supporters. The leadership shown by Vicario in protecting his teammate and acknowledging the fans’ sentiments highlights the team’s commitment to overcoming their current challenges.
