Nottingham Forest extended their winless streak in the Premier League following a 2-2 draw against Manchester United at the City Ground. Under the guidance of manager Sean Dyche, the Reds managed to end a run of four consecutive league defeats but were left frustrated by what they perceived as poor officiating. The match saw Forest come from behind with goals from Morgan Gibbs-White and Nicolo Savona, but a contentious corner decision allowed United to level the score.
Sean Dyche said: “It’s not inconclusive. I’ve seen it back. That’s two decisions that are not right that have gone against us (including against Bournemouth last weekend). They give corners that aren’t corners. They gave one last week and one this week. It’s a really poor decision. That decides a lot.”
In his main press conference with the media, Dyche said: “Two weeks on the trot, which is bizarre in itself. Similar (incidents) but different. Today, I just can’t understand it. The assistant referee is stood away and has a goal and a net in the way, but apparently can see it. That has got to be wrong in the current climate. Someone has got to be able to overrule these decisions. They are just really quick (to do). It will only take five seconds. Of course you can say you have got to deal with the corner, but the point is it shouldn’t have been that. That is really difficult. That is really frustrating two weeks on the trot. With all the technology and all that’s at stake – particularly for us as a club with the start we’ve had – that’s a big moment. All of a sudden that goes against you, it’s very frustrating when it could be really easily cleared up.”
The match was a rollercoaster for Nottingham Forest, who initially fell behind but showed resilience in the second half. Goals from Gibbs-White and Savona turned the game in their favor, providing hope for a much-needed victory. However, the controversy arose when a corner was awarded to Manchester United, despite claims that Savona had kept the ball in play. Casemiro capitalized on this opportunity, heading in the equalizer that left Forest players and fans alike in disbelief.
This result leaves Nottingham Forest still searching for their first win since the opening day of the season when Nuno Espirito Santo was at the helm. The draw, while breaking a losing streak, does little to alleviate the pressure on Dyche and his squad as they navigate a challenging Premier League campaign. The manager’s comments highlight ongoing frustrations with officiating decisions, which he believes have significantly impacted the team’s results.
As Forest continues to grapple with these challenges, the spotlight remains on their ability to convert promising performances into victories. The coming weeks will be crucial as they aim to climb the league table and secure their first win under Dyche’s management.
