Declan Rice
Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice paid a heartfelt tribute to his late aunt following his goal against Burnley, a match that saw the Gunners secure a commanding victory. Rice, who scored Arsenal’s second goal in a well-executed counter-attack, expressed his emotions after the game, highlighting the personal significance of his performance. The Gunners’ win was marked by a strong first-half display, with Rice and his teammates showcasing their quality on the pitch.
Declan Rice said: “My auntie passed away before the Fulham game. I loved her to death. Travelled everywhere to watch me with my mum. I know she’s watching down so that was for her today.”
Rice added: “They’ve maybe lost once in like 18 months. We knew it was going to be tough, so we had to stick to our principles. Our quality shone through and we could have scored four or five in the first half. Two goals are perfect for us. If you look at the goal as a whole, we’re defending a long throw from our own half. Big Gabby [Gabriel] wins the ball and I keep running with the ball. I was like a traditional number nine!”
Mikel Arteta said: “He won I don’t know how many balls and tackles. It’s the evolution of a player. The first half was exceptional, we scored two goals and gave nothing away. That was the platform. We had to make a few changes and didn’t have that much control in the second half. Defending was exceptional again, we didn’t give anything.”
Rice’s performance was not only a personal tribute but also a crucial contribution to Arsenal’s success against a resilient Burnley side. The midfielder’s ability to channel the instincts of a classic centre-forward was instrumental in breaking down Scott Parker’s team, who had been formidable at home. Arsenal’s first-half dominance was evident as they capitalized on their opportunities, with Rice’s goal coming from a precise delivery by Leandro Trossard.
Manager Mikel Arteta praised Rice for his tenacity and ability to step up when it mattered most, reflecting on the player’s growth and impact on the team. Arteta also commended the team’s overall performance, particularly their defensive solidity, which ensured Burnley had limited chances to threaten Arsenal’s lead.
The victory not only bolstered Arsenal’s position in the league but also highlighted the team’s potential to be more ruthless in front of goal. With Rice’s emotional dedication and Arteta’s tactical acumen, the Gunners continue to build momentum in their campaign.
