Liverpool’s recent 3-2 defeat at Brentford was marked by a controversial refereeing decision that has sparked discussions among fans and pundits alike. During the first half, Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo went down in the penalty area following a challenge from Brentford’s Nathan Collins. Referee Simon Hooper, however, dismissed Liverpool’s penalty appeals, a decision that was later supported by former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg.
Mark Clattenburg said: “I have been a big critic of referees recently, but I want to praise Simon Hooper here. There’s a couple of things a referee is going to look at. The leg was already there. The second is to look at the attacker’s arms. If you watch a school child fall in the playground, they automatically put out their arms out to protect themselves. He sees Collins’ leg and anticipates it. That gives a top referee all the signs they need to play on. It’s probably one of the best decisions I have seen this season. There’s huge pressure, it’s one of the biggest sides in the country. To make that decision in a split-second is incredible.”
Clattenburg’s comments were made during the Whistleblowers podcast, where he elaborated on the nuances of the decision-making process in high-pressure situations. He noted that Gakpo’s fall had the ‘tell-tale signs’ of a dive, emphasizing the importance of natural reactions in such scenarios.
The decision was further validated by Video Assistant Referee (VAR) Chris Kavanagh, who reviewed Hooper’s call and agreed that no penalty should be awarded. Clattenburg highlighted the significance of the decision, given the stature of Liverpool as one of the biggest clubs in the country.
Despite the initial ruling, VAR later identified a separate incident involving Virgil van Dijk, which occurred on the line of the penalty area. This led to Brentford being awarded a penalty, allowing Igor Thiago to extend their lead to 3-1.
This incident has once again brought the role of VAR and the decision-making process of referees under scrutiny, with Clattenburg’s endorsement of Hooper’s decision adding a layer of credibility to the call.
