Guglielmo Vicario
Guglielmo Vicario, Tottenham Hotspur’s Italian goalkeeper, has been in the spotlight after securing back-to-back clean sheets against Monaco and Everton. His recent performances have marked a significant improvement following the 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa, where he conceded long-range goals from Morgan Rogers and Emi Buendia. Despite initial doubts, Vicario’s form has been praised by Gary Neville, who noted the goalkeeper’s enhanced solidity and reliability.
Gary Neville said: “They did things certainly last season they weren’t capable of doing, and that’s being reliable when they’re not playing well. Can they soak up teams putting balls into their box? They did that today. I think they defended really well. The goalkeeper looks a lot better. There were times when I wasn’t 100 per cent on him, but I just think there is an element of him looking a lot more solid than he has been.”
Thomas Frank said: “I think the two goals against Villa, I don’t think it’s mistakes. I don’t think it’s any of that. It was two great finishes. But what I would say, and as you said, I think he was very good today. I think some of the saves were exceptional tonight. He’s a big part of why we got a hard-fought point, but at the end of the day it can be a crucial point.”
Vicario’s influence extends beyond his on-field performances, as he has become an essential presence in the dressing room, especially with captain Cristian Romero sidelined due to injury. His contribution is expected to be recognized with a rest in the upcoming Carabao Cup match against Newcastle, where Antonin Kinsky is anticipated to start.
Tottenham’s defensive record has been impressive, with Vicario playing a pivotal role. Spurs now share the second-best defense in the Premier League, trailing only Arsenal’s David Raya and Newcastle’s Nick Pope in terms of clean sheets. Vicario’s save percentage stands at an impressive 78.8%, surpassed only by Raya and Sunderland’s Robin Roefs.
In addition to his defensive capabilities, Tottenham’s improvement in set-piece scenarios has been notable. Vicario’s recent performances, including crucial saves against Beto and Iliman Ndiaye, have solidified his standing as a key player for the team.
