Pep Guardiola
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has provided an update on Erling Haaland’s condition following the team’s recent defeat to Aston Villa. Haaland, who has been a crucial figure for City this season, suffered a knock after colliding with the goalpost during the match. Guardiola expressed hope that the Norwegian striker will not miss any upcoming games due to the incident.
Pep Guardiola said: “Hopefully Erling Haaland will not miss any games after crunching into the post late on in Manchester City’s defeat to Aston Villa.”
Haaland’s attempt to score in the dying moments of the game was thwarted by an offside call against Omar Marmoush, who delivered the ball. Despite the setback, Haaland managed to finish the match, and Guardiola is optimistic about his recovery. The League Cup game against Swansea was initially planned as a rest period for Haaland, with the focus now on ensuring his readiness for the upcoming clash with Bournemouth.
Haaland’s recent form has been impressive, as he had been on a scoring streak for both club and country, netting in 12 consecutive matches before the game against Villa. However, the match against Aston Villa marked the first time in several games that no other City player stepped up to fill the scoring gap, leaving a Burnley center-back as the team’s second-highest scorer this season.
Guardiola said: “We haven’t scored a lot of goals this season and we have to make a step up. Today it is difficult because they defended really well, went to a back five or back six and we had to bring the ball outside with Savinho and then Jeremy [Doku]. We made the crosses, how many times Phil attacked or Tijjani. We were there, we were close. I had the feeling other games we won we were not so productive.”
The Manchester City manager acknowledged the need for more players to contribute to the team’s goal-scoring efforts, especially after their recent 2-0 victory over Everton. Despite the lack of goals against Villa, Guardiola was satisfied with the team’s attacking display. He emphasized the challenge posed by Villa’s defensive setup and highlighted the need for improvement in regaining possession during high-pressure situations.
Guardiola added: “It’s just in our high pressing when they got behind us we were not good enough to regain the ball and then you have to defend deep. With the pace of [Morgan] Rogers and [Ollie] Watkins and the physicality of [Amadou] Onana and [Boubacar] Kamara, we know it. It’s a Champions League team – unfortunately for them they are not there – but it’s a top team for many years and we competed really well – we are in a good way.”
As Manchester City prepares for their next fixtures, Guardiola’s focus will be on ensuring Haaland’s fitness and addressing the team’s goal-scoring challenges. The manager remains confident in his squad’s ability to compete at the highest level, despite recent setbacks.
