Alexander Isak
Alexander Isak’s high-profile transfer to Liverpool has been overshadowed by fitness challenges, reportedly linked to his summer boycott of Newcastle United. The Swedish striker’s move was one of the marquee deals of the transfer window, but his absence from pre-season training has left him struggling to meet the physical demands at Anfield.
Chris Sutton said: “It feels like what has happened to him is a case of you reap what you sow. Isak has been short of full fitness and especially sharpness all season anyway, and he did not help himself there by missing training with Newcastle in order to try to force his move to Anfield through. He got what he wanted, but now he is trying to play catch-up instead of hitting the ground running because of the time he had off, and that is when you can pick up injuries. Isak is too good a player not to eventually start scoring goals but this whole situation has affected Liverpool as a team too, because his lack of fitness is one of the reasons they have not clicked in the final third yet.”
Isak’s decision to sit out of Newcastle’s pre-season, citing “broken promises” from manager Eddie Howe’s side, has had repercussions. Liverpool invested a significant £125m in the 26-year-old, only to find him unable to complete a full 90 minutes at the start of the season. After making eight appearances, Isak was sidelined from the squad for Liverpool’s match against Brentford due to a groin injury, further highlighting his ongoing fitness struggles.
In contrast, Hugo Ekitike, who joined Liverpool from Frankfurt for £79m, has quickly found his footing. The French forward has scored six goals and provided one assist in his first 13 appearances, making a strong case for the starting striker role. Ekitike’s impressive form has intensified the competition between the two forwards, with Ekitike currently edging ahead despite the higher fee paid for Isak.
The situation underscores the challenges Liverpool faces in integrating Isak into their attacking lineup. His fitness issues have not only impacted his personal performance but have also affected the team’s overall cohesion in the final third. As Isak works towards regaining full fitness, Liverpool will hope to see a return on their substantial investment in the form of goals and improved team dynamics.
