Brenden Aaronson
Brenden Aaronson emerged as the standout performer in Leeds United’s hard-fought victory against West Ham, scoring the opening goal within three minutes and delivering a dynamic performance. The American midfielder’s efforts were instrumental in Leeds’ 2-1 win, a result that helped the team bounce back from previous setbacks. Aaronson’s determination to improve his finishing paid off, as he had been working on his shooting after missing a key opportunity against Burnley the previous week.
Brenden Aaronson said: “It was a relief for me, to be honest with you. Letting the team down a little bit last week, not scoring, it was tough mentally because you don’t get many chances in this league. It was difficult for a moment of time but I kept at it. I worked this whole week on my finishing again. I am proud of my mentality and I am proud of the group. I think the biggest thing for me is getting in the box and the ball bounces your way but that is all about positioning and reacting. I am really happy with the goal and I am happy with the group and the atmosphere. It was amazing to score early. It was a great atmosphere and I am proud of the team.”
Aaronson added: “We had a conversation the last couple of games. We have given away late goals and we haven’t been at our best at late stages of the game. It was huge for us today to keep the mentality. I think that was the message all week. Late minutes in the game, stay on top of it and get the result which we needed today to hold the 2-1 win. Defensively, we were good today. We handled a lot of crossing situations from them. West Ham is a team that has a ton of quality so it was definitely a difficult game. I am just proud of the group.”
Leeds United faced a tense finish to the match, with Matheus Fernandes scoring for West Ham in the 90th minute, reducing Leeds’ lead to 2-1. Joe Rodon’s header on the 15th minute ultimately proved to be the decisive goal. Despite the pressure, Leeds managed to hold on for the win, learning from previous instances where they conceded late goals against Fulham and Bournemouth. The team’s defensive resilience in the final minutes was crucial, showcasing their growth and determination to improve their performance in closing stages.
This victory not only highlighted Aaronson’s individual brilliance but also underscored Leeds United’s collective effort to address their defensive vulnerabilities. The win against a quality side like West Ham is a testament to the team’s hard work and focus, setting a positive tone for their upcoming fixtures.
