Manchester City is dealing with a series of injury setbacks as they gear up for their match against Aston Villa at Villa Park. The team will be without several key players, including Rodri, who is sidelined with a hamstring issue, and Rayan Ait-Nouri, who remains unavailable. These absences pose a significant challenge for Pep Guardiola’s side as they aim to improve upon last year’s performance at Villa Park.
Pep Guardiola said: “They were much better than us the last two fixtures we played at Villa Park. Hopefully, it will be different on Sunday. The admiration I have for Unai is so high. He’s incredibly consistent, well prepared, and so smart. At Aston Villa, I know they are not in the Champions League this season for one point. Last season for me they were Champions League [quality], they created a lot of problems for the champions PSG. They are well organised, quality, one of the toughest away games we have in the season. Defensively they are really good, from set pieces also and I have the feeling he improved a lot in terms of the build-up. With the keeper they have it is so difficult to control the pressing and they bring a lot of players in the middle.”
Guardiola continued: “The connection between them is really good, they break the lines with the strikers and when that happens they are so quick, attacking quick with the speed they have up front. The physicality is really good.”
The absence of Rodri is particularly concerning for City, as he has been a pivotal figure in their midfield. His hamstring injury, sustained during the match against Brentford, has already caused him to miss two games, and there is no set timeline for his return. Additionally, Abdukodir Khusanov, another player on the mend, will not be traveling with the team, although Guardiola mentioned that he is nearing recovery.
Despite these challenges, Guardiola remains optimistic about his team’s prospects. He acknowledged the formidable nature of Aston Villa, praising their organization and defensive prowess. Villa’s ability to create problems for high-caliber teams like PSG last season highlights the challenge City faces. Guardiola’s admiration for Villa’s manager, Unai Emery, underscores the respect he holds for their tactical acumen.
