Sandro Tonali
Newcastle United have received a significant boost with the revelation that Sandro Tonali has signed a secret contract extension during his ban for gambling offences. The new contract, which runs until at least 2029 with an option for an additional 12 months, highlights the club’s commitment to the Italian international. Tonali’s performances since returning from suspension have been stellar, attracting admiration from across the football community. The former Manchester United playmaker, Paul Scholes, recently praised Tonali’s midfield prowess, further cementing his status as one of the top talents in the Premier League.
Paul Scholes said: “Right now? That’s tough. I still don’t class Moises Caicedo as an all-round midfield player. I know he scored a great goal and was brilliant the other day. I got some stick last year after having a go at him, and I almost thought about taking that back, because he was brilliant in the Club World Cup. I just prefer the controlling type of midfield players who play with a bit more style and can score goals a bit more often than Caicedo. It was a brilliant goal against Liverpool, but you wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t do that again for another 18 months, would you? He’s one of the best at what he does which is breaking up the play, he’s brilliant at that. But I prefer the other types. Alexis Mac Allister was absolutely brilliant last season, and he controlled a lot of games and I think Liverpool are missing that at the moment. I love Sandro Tonali, as well. He’s been brilliant. Very good. I would probably choose Tonali at this point.”
Cole said: “If Scholesy has said it then I’ll agree with him, he does know a midfielder. I really like him. I watched him three or four times last season and he had the ban, didn’t he, which was unfortunate for him. Every time I watched him he looked like he was adding a little something, [getting] more mobile. He looks like one of those who does everything. They’ve got lovely balance [in midfield].”
Despite being an unused substitute in Newcastle’s 3-0 victory over Jose Mourinho’s side due to illness, Tonali’s influence remains significant. His teammate, Bruno Guimaraes, has also been in fine form, leading to discussions about who might be the top midfielder at the club. Former Newcastle striker Les Ferdinand highlighted a tactical shift by manager Eddie Howe that has benefited Tonali’s play.
Les Ferdinand said: “I think the biggest difference was when he first came to the club he played as an eight. Then last season, midway through it Eddie changed it and played him as a six and that’s when he’s just gone on from there. I love watching him because he takes the minimum amount of touches when he needs to. If he can play it first time, he’ll play it first time. As a centre-forward you’re looking at him and think I can make a run and he’ll find me. Unfortunately he’s not playing [against Benfica] but this is the place for him to shine.”
Tonali’s contract extension is a testament to Newcastle’s ambition and the player’s potential to become a central figure in their future successes. His adaptability and skill set have made him a standout performer, and his continued development under Howe’s guidance promises much for the club.
