Mikel Arteta Arsenal
Arsenal continued their impressive run in the UEFA Champions League with a commanding 4-0 victory over Atletico Madrid. This victory marks their third consecutive win in the competition, having previously defeated Athletic Club and Olympiakos without conceding a goal. Gabriel Magalhaes opened the scoring with a header from Declan Rice’s free-kick, followed by a stunning goal from Gabriel Martinelli. Viktor Gyokeres then ended his goal drought with two close-range strikes, securing another three points for the Gunners. Arsenal now sits joint-top of the Champions League table, level with Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan.
Jamie Carragher said: “Right now, I think Arsenal and Bayern (Munich) are the two most impressive teams I’ve seen when you look at their performances domestically and what they’re doing in the Champions League. I’ve said before on this show that I’ve never had Arsenal down as a Champions League club. I know that might sound obvious because they’ve never won it before but I’ve always thought there’s something about them that doesn’t connect, they’ve never really gone close. It wasn’t that team that got to the Champions League final. I do look at this team now and see how strong they are defensively. My Liverpool team that won the Champions League [in 2005] were not a great team attacking-wise but we were strong defensively. That always gives you a chance, especially when you get to the knockout stages and the two-legged ties. If you’re strong defensively you’ve always got a chance.”
Mikel Arteta said: “I’m extremely happy and proud of the performance and the results against a really good side. I was very impressed when I analysed them and what I’ve seen today about them as well. So, I knew about the difficulty of it.”
Arsenal’s resurgence under Mikel Arteta has been marked by a newfound defensive solidity, reminiscent of Jamie Carragher’s Liverpool team that clinched the Champions League in 2005. The Gunners’ ability to maintain clean sheets against formidable opponents highlights their defensive prowess, which could prove crucial in the knockout stages of the competition. With Arsenal’s current form, they are emerging as strong contenders for the Champions League title, a feat they have never achieved in their history. Arteta’s tactical acumen and the team’s cohesive performances have instilled a sense of optimism among fans and pundits alike.
