Mikel Arteta Arsenal
The reigning Premier League champions, Liverpool, suffered a significant setback at Anfield, losing 2-1 to Ruben Amorim’s side. Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring early, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to put his team ahead. Despite Cody Gakpo’s equalizer, Harry Maguire’s decisive header secured the victory for United, leaving Liverpool with their third consecutive league defeat. This result has allowed Arsenal to extend their lead over Liverpool to four points, while also closing the gap to Manchester City to just three points.
Mikel Arteta said: “The recent history wasn’t in our favour and we wanted to change that like we did against Newcastle and West Ham at home. And especially the first 10 to 15 minutes, it took us a while to get into the game with some very unusual giveaways that has caused some transitions, and after that, we started to dominate the game throughout the rest of the game much better.”
Arteta continued: “We talked about knocking on the door against this team; they are really well organised, especially with the context of the result. The best against Atletico Madrid is going to be different to the best of today and make sure that we are able to take the game into those areas that is going to favour our possibility to win the game, and we continue to try to improve.”
The Arsenal boss added: “Yes, we know the schedule – you could see some of the players, not only ours, their players as well and there have been some injuries as well. The load is what it is, that’s why we need it and the games now and the context demands you a bigger squad. I think all the top teams, we are in the same boat, we’re going to have to manage that really well to look after them and especially to get the best out of them.”
Under Mikel Arteta’s guidance since December 2019, Arsenal has evolved into a formidable force in European football. Despite only having one trophy, the 2020 FA Cup, Arteta’s tenure has seen a significant improvement in the team’s performance. Arsenal’s current position in the league standings, bolstered by Liverpool’s recent struggles, provides them with a renewed opportunity to challenge for the Premier League title. As the season progresses, each fixture becomes a potential banana skin, but the Gunners remain optimistic about their prospects.
