Sir Alex Ferguson
Ramon Calliste, once a promising talent at Manchester United, has navigated a remarkable journey from the football pitch to the world of business. Initially brought to Old Trafford by Sir Alex Ferguson, Calliste trained alongside legends such as David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, and Cristiano Ronaldo. He was even listed among the top 100 young players globally shortly after signing his contract. However, despite winning the FA Youth Cup in 2003, his career at Manchester United never took off, and he was released in 2005 without making a senior appearance.
Ramon Calliste said: “The injury I had, which I still have trouble with today, is just insane. I had a limp for about three years that never went. It was a terrible, terrible process. When I was trying to regain my career, I couldn’t because I had a limp. Who’s going to sign somebody with a limp? I could score 20 goals in a game, but I had a limp, it doesn’t look like I’m fit, so I do a fitness test and I’m not going to pass it.”
Calliste reflected on his time at United: “It was a matter of ‘look, it’s just bad timing, there’s too many people in front of you at the moment, he doesn’t want to hold me back and make false promises, I guess’. It was tough emotionally. It was a bit of a shock. [But] you start to realise you’re a man entering man zone and you need to toughen up and deal with it and move on. Everything happens for a reason. No bitterness. The decision was the decision. There’s no hard feelings there, it’s all good, they’re a great club, and I’m still a fan of the club.”
After leaving Manchester United, Calliste became the top goal scorer for the Reds’ reserve side during the 2005/06 season. However, he struggled to break into the senior team and eventually moved to Scunthorpe United in 2006, seeking first-team action. Unfortunately, disaster struck when he suffered a severe pre-season injury, dislocating his ankle, fracturing a bone, and damaging ligaments. Despite multiple operations and assurances of recovery, the injury left him with a persistent limp, ultimately forcing him to retire from football.
Calliste’s transition from football to business has been nothing short of impressive. In 2013, he launched Global Watches, a luxury watch company that has achieved significant success, generating up to £15 million annually. His clientele includes footballers and celebrities, showcasing his ability to leverage his network and reputation in the sports world.
Calliste explained: “Obviously once I realised that football wasn’t going to be for me, I had to find something that I used to wake up and enjoy. I saw room for myself in the market. Some say it’s over-saturated. If anyone is doing something good, there’s enough out there for everyone. It’s a very lucrative market. I think people are enjoying their money nowadays a bit more than they used to, because interest rates in banks – if you’ve got money sitting in the bank, I don’t think you get much back for it nowadays. The values of watches helps.”
Calliste’s story is a testament to resilience and adaptability, illustrating how setbacks can lead to new opportunities and success in unexpected fields.
