Sunderland is set to host Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Stadium of Light this Saturday afternoon, aiming to capitalize on their promising start to the Premier League season. The Black Cats are eyeing a victory against Wolves, currently languishing at the bottom of the league table. This fixture presents a golden opportunity for Sunderland to secure valuable points on home turf. Head Coach Le Bris addressed the media on Thursday, providing updates on team selection and player fitness.
Le Bris said: “We’re hopeful that Noah can start, it’s possible. For Noah, we checked him yesterday and he seems okay. We’ll see after the training session today and tomorrow but we are positive. At the minute, he seems okay. He had this injury before so he knows how it can evolve and how serious it can be. At the moment he’s positive.”
In the event that Noah Sadiki is unable to feature, Le Bris might turn to Dan Neil, last season’s promotion-winning captain, who has seen limited Premier League action this term.
Le Bris continued: “He [Neil] has been working hard, and I think if we need him, he will be ready. He showed that [in a behind-closed-doors friendly] against Livingston. It’s just a question of time and opportunities, but he is definitely an option for us.”
The possibility of Dan Neil starting has stirred mixed reactions among Sunderland supporters. A recent poll by The Echo revealed a divided fan base, with opinions ranging from skepticism to strong support for the young midfielder.
Laurie Reed commented: “No, not even sure he’s good enough to warm the bench,” while Graeme Ferguson added: “Not if we want to win the game.”
Despite some reservations, a significant portion of the fan base is backing Neil to seize the opportunity and prove his worth in the Premier League.
Andy Turnock stated: “People having a go at Dan Neil, was captain and got us promoted last year… Have a word.” Stephen Mosey echoed this sentiment: “I think Dan Neil deserves his chance to prove himself. Really hope the lad proves his doubters wrong.” Nobby Ellis simply remarked: “Yes, give the boy a chance,” and Niall McEntee questioned: “Why the hell not? Dan is well up for the challenge.”
The debate among fans highlights the pressure and expectations surrounding Neil’s potential inclusion in the starting lineup. While some fans question his readiness, others believe his leadership and past performances merit a chance to shine at the top level. As Sunderland prepares for their clash with Wolves, the decision rests with Le Bris, who has thus far demonstrated astute judgment in his managerial role.
Rob Gilchrist urged unity, saying: “I do love how so many people are more educated in how to set a side up and are so deeply embedded in knowledge that they can identify the strengths and weaknesses of an individual player more than the head coach who, let’s face it, hasn’t got a great deal wrong so far.”
The anticipation builds as Sunderland fans await the head coach’s final decision, hoping for a performance that will further solidify their promising start to the season.
