Benjamin Sesko

Manchester United’s summer signing, Benjamin Sesko, has become a topic of discussion among former club legends despite his recent upturn in form. The 22-year-old striker, acquired from RB Leipzig for a potential £73.7 million, initially struggled to make an impact, failing to score in his first six appearances. However, Sesko has found his scoring touch with two goals in his last two matches. As United gear up for a crucial encounter against Premier League champions Liverpool, the spotlight remains on Sesko’s ability to deliver on the big stage.
Rio Ferdinand said: “He ain’t getting no chances man, he ain’t getting no opportunities, there’s nothing created for him. That’s the concern. Getting him on the end of things. He’s got to think about getting on the end of things. That’s something I think has got to be looked at, and fixed quick. I don’t want to think about what it could turn out to be.”
Nicky Butt said: “I was and I wasn’t. I know [Matheus] Cunha has done really well over the last couple of seasons, but I would really like an experienced striker. I hope I’m wrong, but I really hope they aren’t making the same mistakes with [Benjamin] Sesko as they did with Rasmus [Hojlund]. Honestly, for what it would have cost, I would have gone and brought in someone like Ollie Watkins, someone to help and pull the young strikers out of a bad patch. Ollie Watkins, or someone like that, would be who I would have been looking to bring in.”
Peter Schmeichel said: “The signing of Benjamin Sesko was a little bit weird to me because we have Rasmus Hojlund, who has been starved of service for two years. You only have to see what he’s doing at Napoli with Kevin de Bruyne and Scott McTominay to play with – he’s scoring goals. I’ve consistently said this for two-and-a-half years – Rasmus Hojlund will be a 25-goal-a-year striker for Manchester United, but he needs service. We let him go on the stats that he scored very few goals last season and bring Sesko in at the time we bring in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbuemo, who would give Hojlund first-class service.”
Roy Keane said: “Too early to tell [on Sesko]. Yeah, I think when there’s a lot of speculation sometimes, you know how much some [sic] a lot of lads miss training over pre-season and maybe just looks like he’s not up to speed yet, but yeah, undecided yet.”
Despite Sesko’s recent performances, concerns linger about his long-term impact at Manchester United. Rio Ferdinand highlighted the lack of opportunities created for the young striker, emphasizing the need for quick adjustments to integrate him effectively into the team’s attack. Nicky Butt expressed reservations about the decision to sign Sesko over a more experienced striker, suggesting that someone like Ollie Watkins could have provided more immediate support for the club’s young forwards.
Peter Schmeichel questioned the logic behind letting Rasmus Hojlund leave while bringing in Sesko, pointing out Hojlund’s potential to thrive with better service. Meanwhile, Roy Keane urged patience, acknowledging that it might be too soon to judge Sesko’s capabilities, especially given the disruptions of pre-season training.
As Sesko prepares to face Liverpool, the pressure mounts for him to prove his worth and silence his critics. The upcoming match presents an opportunity for the Slovenian to showcase his talent on a significant stage and potentially shift the narrative surrounding his early days at Old Trafford.
