Matheus Cunha
Manchester United’s recent acquisition, Matheus Cunha, has had a challenging start to his tenure at the club following a high-profile transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers. The 26-year-old forward joined United in the summer, with the club activating a £62.5 million release clause in his contract. Despite an impressive stint in the Premier League with Wolves, where he scored 15 goals and provided six assists in 33 appearances last season, Cunha has yet to find the back of the net in his first six games for United.
Matheus Cunha said: “Without a doubt. United’s games are shown more on Brazilian television. I left the country very young, and being able to watch them more often during the week definitely connects me with them (the fans). United is a club with many Brazilian fans. I think because I play for Manchester and people watch me more on the field, they understand how I play better. I think it’s part of having that weight (of being seen as a centre forward), which is a privilege. And if I’m going to have that weight and be champion, I think it’s worth putting up with some of the confusion surrounding Matheus’ playing situation.”
Cunha added: “I was very happy at Wolves. Helping in the best way possible was very important. They also helped me, and I was able to reciprocate. Among records and goals, what made me most proud was reciprocating the affection. Being here now in the national team, at United, is, without a doubt, a different level. A different moment as a player. I try as much as possible to adapt, to learn… It’s only been two months, but it feels like I’ve been here for a long time because of the club’s current situation, because I have to get results as quickly as possible, because I’m a signing.”
Cunha’s transition from Wolves to United has been marked by a struggle to replicate his previous form. However, his performance during the international break offered a glimpse of his potential. He provided an assist for Vinicius Junior in Brazil’s emphatic 5-0 victory over South Korea. This performance highlighted his capability to contribute effectively on the international stage, even as he navigates the challenges at his new club.
The forward’s reflections on his move underscore the pressure and expectations that come with playing for a club of United’s stature. Despite the initial setbacks, Cunha remains optimistic about his future at Old Trafford. His comments reveal a player determined to adapt and succeed, driven by the support of a large Brazilian fanbase and the opportunity to prove himself on a bigger stage.
As the season progresses, Cunha’s ability to overcome these early challenges will be crucial for both his personal success and Manchester United’s ambitions. His journey at the club is still in its early stages, and with time, he hopes to establish himself as a key player for the Red Devils.
