Nico O’Reilly has rapidly ascended the ranks at Manchester City, establishing himself as a first-team regular and now pushing for an England debut. The 20-year-old, who has recently signed a five-year contract, is making waves in a position he hadn’t anticipated.
Nico O’Reilly said: “I chose City because the training was a lot better.” He continued, “I grew up always being in the box, scoring goals, and it’s what I enjoy doing, so whenever I get an opportunity, I’m going to try and take them. Obviously, the way we play at City, I’m allowed to go high, I’m allowed to go inside and it’s a bit freer out wide, so as long as someone is in those positions, [and] the manager’s happy, there are definitely chances for me to get in those positions.”
O’Reilly’s journey began with a decision between Manchester City and Manchester United, ultimately choosing City due to superior training facilities. This decision has paid dividends, as he has become City’s breakout star of 2025. Initially an attacking midfielder, O’Reilly’s versatility has seen him transition to a left-back role, a move initiated by Pep Guardiola during an FA Cup match against Salford City. His adaptability has not gone unnoticed, earning him a call-up to the England squad after just ten Premier League starts.
O’Reilly reflected on his journey, saying, “I didn’t even know what to think at the time, but yeah, I loved it and obviously I hear all the chants and stuff and it’s such a good feeling. I’m just a kid from Manchester, and I grew up here, so to play for my boyhood club – my dream club – and hear the fans give me support like that, it means so much.”
O’Reilly’s shift to left-back came as a surprise, even to him, as he had always been an attacking force during his academy days. His impressive stats with the Under-18s, where he scored 21 goals and provided 17 assists in 46 appearances, highlight his attacking prowess. However, his ability to adapt has been crucial, especially with Rayan Ait-Nouri’s injury paving the way for his England call-up.
The young player’s breakthrough moment came during an FA Cup quarter-final against Bournemouth, where he turned the game in City’s favor. His performances have not only solidified his place in the team but also endeared him to the fans, who have recognized his contributions with chants and support.
Pep Guardiola once remarked, “Wow, this guy is big,” upon seeing O’Reilly’s physicality during senior training. This physical presence has been a significant asset, especially when Guardiola considered him as a potential fill-in for Rodri.
