Steven Gerrard Manager
Steven Gerrard has opened up about his dismissal from Aston Villa, shedding light on the challenges he faced during his managerial stint. The former Liverpool captain’s tenure at Villa Park was cut short following a 3-0 defeat to Fulham in October 2022, which led co-owner Nassef Sawiris to make a decisive change. Gerrard’s time at Aston Villa was notably shorter than the average Premier League managerial tenure, highlighting the pressure and expectations at the club.
Steven Gerrard said: “The Villa thing was really tough at the end because the first six months of Villa, I felt like we had control of it, and we had Villa where maybe we should have had them. I think the stats, if you like, were saying that we had them in the top eight, nine teams in the league from taking them at 17. So, we were really in a good place. But I lost control of it quickly and it deteriorated quickly, and I found it hard to get it back. That was tough and frustrating. Look, this is the difference from being a player to a manager. You’re managing a dressing room.”
Gerrard’s reflections on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast reveal the difficulties he encountered in transitioning from player to manager, particularly in managing a dressing room. Despite initial success, Gerrard admitted that he struggled to maintain control, which led to a rapid decline in the team’s performance. The former manager acknowledged that the signs of trouble were evident even before his dismissal, with the team winning only a few games in the latter part of his tenure.
Gerrard continued: “It wasn’t going great before that either, if we’re honest. There were clear signs that in the next season, we’d have a big job ahead and needed much more from a performance point of view. From the turn of the year, it really wasn’t great at all. They only won a handful of games, partly because Gerrard was inexperienced at the top level — especially in handling a dressing room.”
The appointment of Gerrard was seen by some as a risk, with the club’s decision-makers now reflecting on it as a misstep. The managerial role at a club like Aston Villa comes with immense pressure and expectations, and Gerrard’s experience highlights the challenges faced by new managers in the Premier League. Despite the setbacks, Gerrard remains determined, emphasizing that one failed year should not define his career.
Gerrard remarked: “I don’t dislike Gerrard. A lot of Villa fans will use stronger words, but for me, it was just a bad appointment. The club has to hold its hands up — it was a poor decision in hindsight. People have paid big money to make the right choices, and this wasn’t one of them. That was always going to be a risk. We knew Beale is the operator here; he oversees a lot on the training pitch, and we knew he had his own ambitions.”
