ange Postecoglou
Ange Postecoglou is under significant pressure just seven games into his tenure at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground. The former Celtic manager, who replaced Nuno Espirito Santo, is yet to secure a victory and has suffered five defeats. With Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis contemplating another managerial change, the situation has sparked debate among football pundits. Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Tim Sherwood has weighed in, suggesting it is premature to make a decision on Postecoglou’s future.
Tim Sherwood said: “I think it’s ridiculous to suggest sacking a manager (now). He’s had 12 training days at the club. He is changing the philosophy to the way he wants to play. I’m not saying he doesn’t need a win; of course he needs a win. He knows that, because pressure mounts very quickly on managers, especially in the Premier League.” He added: “Ange Postecoglou has gone in there on a hiding to nothing because the fans didn’t want anyone other than Nuno. Now they’ve got someone and it hasn’t started so well, but he hasn’t had the time. I think it’s ridiculous to suggest to get a new man.”
Sherwood further elaborated on Marinakis’ decision-making process, emphasizing the need for patience with Postecoglou.
Sherwood continued: “Mr Marinakis knows what he wants, and what he wanted was Ange Postecoglou. He didn’t want Nuno anymore. Is he going to stick to his guns? Does he think that is a reasonable amount of time between the beginning of his (Postecoglou’s) contract to where we are now? I don’t, I think it’s ludicrous. But if he does, I’m sure he will pull the trigger and bring in Sean Dyche, if it is to be Sean Dyche.”
Sean Dyche, the former Everton and Burnley manager, is reportedly the frontrunner to replace Postecoglou should Marinakis decide to make a change. Dyche, who has ties to Forest as a former youth player, could bring along his long-time assistants Ian Woan and Steve Stone, both of whom are considered Nottingham Forest legends.
Sherwood remarked: “Stylistically, it’s similar to Nuno with the way he wants to play. You would have Steve Stone and Ian Woan going back there, too. Both Nottingham Forest legends of the club. I understand Sean lives close to Nottingham, so it would fit quite well – not that that matters for any manager. I just feel like it would be ridiculous to sack Ange at the moment. I wouldn’t be surprised. Would I be surprised if I woke up tomorrow and Ange Postecoglou had been removed from his job? Of course I wouldn’t, this is football.”
Despite advocating for Postecoglou’s retention, Sherwood acknowledged that Dyche would be a competent replacement, highlighting the challenges any new manager would face given the short time frame.
Sherwood concluded: “I’m not saying he’s better or the same or any worse than Ange Postecoglou. I think it would be a struggle for whoever takes over in that short space of time. Nottingham Forest overachieved last season. They are right to dream; the fans have a right to dream. They were up there for a very long time. Everyone expected it to.”
The debate surrounding Postecoglou’s future at Nottingham Forest underscores the high expectations at the club following last season’s achievements. With fans eager for success, the decision on whether to stick with Postecoglou or opt for a change remains a crucial one for the club’s hierarchy.
