James Milner
Brighton & Hove Albion’s start to the Premier League season has been met with mixed feelings from veteran midfielder James Milner. With nine points secured from their first seven games, including notable victories against Chelsea and Manchester City, Milner has expressed both optimism and a call for improvement as the team heads into the international break.
James Milner said: “I think slightly disappointing for me for where we could be. We have shown we can beat anybody on our day. We have that ability. The next step for us, which is normal for a team striving to get to the next level, the biggest thing is obviously consistency and that is something we haven’t quite got right yet. That also goes with young players as well. We’ve got a lot of young players, we signed a lot of players in the summer. So there are reasons for that. It’s not excuses. There are reasons why we haven’t made that next step we would like to take. But we are all aware that is a step we need to take.”
Milner’s comments highlight a sense of ambition within the squad, emphasizing the need for consistency as a key factor in their pursuit of higher achievements. The team has demonstrated their potential by defeating top-tier clubs, yet Milner acknowledges that maintaining such performances regularly is challenging.
Milner added: “It would be more difficult the other way, if we didn’t have the ability to put in performances that we know we can and beat everyone on our day. We know we can do that. It’s not an easy step to take by any means, showing our best level nine times out of ten. But that is the step we need to take.”
As Brighton prepares to face Newcastle United at the Amex Stadium following the international break, Milner remains optimistic about the team’s capacity to enhance their points tally. The presence of young talent and new signings is seen as a foundation for future growth, rather than an excuse for current inconsistencies. The focus remains on harnessing their potential to achieve more consistent results, a crucial step in their development as a competitive Premier League side.
