In a significant development for Tottenham Hotspur, the club’s majority owners, ENIC, have firmly rejected a £4.5 billion takeover bid from Earick’s consortium. The consortium’s interest was “unequivocally rejected” by ENIC, which is managed by the Lewis family Trust, on September 26. This follows a series of public announcements from various interested parties, all of whom have now withdrawn their interest.
The Board of Tottenham Hotspur Limited (the “club”) notes the recent announcements from the Firehawk and Mr Earick’s consortiums that they do not intend to make an offer for the club. The Board thanks them for the constructive approach taken in the discussions with the club’s and the Lewis family’s representatives and respecting the clear position of the Lewis family that the club is not for sale.
The statement, released via the London Stock Exchange, highlighted the clear stance of the Lewis family Trust that the club is not on the market. Amanda Staveley’s PCP International Finance had previously confirmed on September 8 that it did not intend to make an offer for Tottenham, and Firehawk followed suit on October 3. This left Earick’s consortium as the only remaining public bidder, but they have now withdrawn their interest as well.
ENIC, which holds nearly 87% of Tottenham’s shares, remains steadfast in its ownership despite the takeover interest. The club’s shares are publicly traded, subjecting it to the UK Takeover Code, which mandates that any bid or expression of interest must be lodged with the Takeover Code panel and made public.
Since Daniel Levy’s invitation to step down as chairman on September 4, there have been three expressions of interest in acquiring Tottenham. However, the Lewis family Trust has consistently maintained that the club is not for sale.
The situation remains dynamic as Tottenham prepares to face Aston Villa immediately after the international break on October 19. The club’s future ownership structure continues to be a topic of interest, particularly following the recent expressions of interest and subsequent rejections.
