Pep Guardiola
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has expressed confidence in Nico Gonzalez’s development as the young midfielder continues to adapt to the demands of the Premier League. With Rodri recovering from a significant knee injury, patience has become a crucial factor for City’s midfield this season. Gonzalez, who joined the club for £50 million in January, has been tasked with filling Rodri’s shoes, especially with Mateo Kovacic sidelined due to injury.
Pep Guardiola said: “In the 30 minutes that Nico Gonzalez played (against Monaco), he was the player who recovered more ball in the transition.” He added, “He is so young. It’s not like we have had seven or eight years together. He has had not even one year with us together in a tough period and there are many things that in a step by step, he is going to take it, because he is open-minded. He’s incredibly coachable, not all of the players are. He will get it.”
Gonzalez’s performance against Monaco, where he recovered the most balls in transition, impressed Guardiola, despite the controversy surrounding a last-minute penalty he conceded. The City manager has been actively engaging with Gonzalez, offering guidance and support to help him reach his potential. Guardiola’s belief in the midfielder’s ability to adapt and improve is evident, as he draws parallels with Rodri’s initial struggles during his first season at the club.
Guardiola continued: “Even Rodri when he started in his first season, he struggled, it is normal. But Nico is Nico. He has to be Nico.”
As Manchester City competes on multiple fronts, the need for midfield depth is paramount. With Rodri managing his fitness and Kovacic pushing for his first appearance of the season, Gonzalez’s role becomes increasingly significant. Guardiola acknowledges that while Gonzalez is not yet the finished article, there is a mutual desire between player and manager to develop him into an elite performer capable of managing matches in Rodri’s absence.
Guardiola concluded: “Rodri will be ready for the World Cup and next year we will get the best Rodri.”
The City boss remains optimistic that Gonzalez can fill any void left by Rodri, ensuring the team’s midfield remains robust as they navigate a challenging season. As Guardiola continues to nurture Gonzalez’s talent, the young Spaniard’s progress will be crucial in maintaining Manchester City’s competitive edge.
