Sunderland faced a challenging encounter against Manchester United at Old Trafford, succumbing to a 2-0 defeat. Goals from Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko sealed the victory for the home side. Sunderland’s manager, Régis Le Bris, reflected on the match, emphasizing the learning experience for his team after a lackluster first-half performance.
Régis Le Bris said: “I’m disappointed, because I think we that didn’t start well. We were aware of their threat, how they can be direct and threaten from the second balls. They created from this point, their right side was very strong with Mbuemo and Amad. We were aware of this and prepared for it, but sometimes the reality is different. For 30 minutes, we were not able to manage this part of the game and probably we were a little bit sloppy on the ball as well, so we were just not always at the level required. We tried to go man for man and to try to create something a bit more simple for us. It was a question of duels, two or three chances for us and two or three for them. In the end our reaction wasn’t enough.”
Le Bris continued: “It’s a good lesson for us today, when we don’t start properly either individually or collectively, you can feel that you are really fragile. You concede chances and can’t express yourself with the ball. Even if Man Utd have struggled, they have always had the ability to create danger. We didn’t manage their strengths properly, so in this case you can’t expect anything. When we pushed a bit more we felt we create danger ourselves, but it wasn’t enough.”
Sunderland’s defensive frailties were exposed early on, particularly on their left flank, where Amad and Bryan Mbuemo posed significant threats. Le Bris made tactical adjustments by switching to a back three, which improved the team’s structure, yet the damage had already been done. Despite a better second-half display, Sunderland’s efforts fell short against a resilient Manchester United side.
The match was not without its controversies. Sunderland was initially awarded a penalty in first-half stoppage time for a foul on Trai Hume by Sesko. However, the decision was overturned following a VAR review. Additionally, Bertrand Traore received a yellow card for diving in the second half after a challenge with Lammens.
Le Bris remarked on the officiating: “We weren’t at the level expected and I don’t think a refereeing decision would have been the difference. The penalty, I haven’t seen the clip so I don’t know.”
The Premier League later released a statement clarifying the penalty incident, explaining that the referee overturned the decision after reviewing the footage, concluding there was no foul by the Manchester United player.
Sunderland’s defeat serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining focus and discipline throughout the match. As Le Bris highlighted, the team must learn from this experience and strive to perform at their best consistently.
