Régis Le Bris
Sunderland faced a challenging encounter at Old Trafford, where they succumbed to a 2-0 defeat against Manchester United. The match saw Sunderland’s head coach, Régis Le Bris, make significant tactical changes in an attempt to regain control after falling behind due to goals from Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko. Despite these efforts, Sunderland struggled to manage the hosts’ direct play and were unable to overturn the deficit.
Régis Le Bris said: “I don’t think it’s just a question of one player, that’s never the case. It was a question of the main dynamic of the team, it wasn’t efficient. It was probably really important to change something otherwise the score could have been different.”
Le Bris opted for a change in formation, introducing Dan Ballard for Adingra and switching to a back five to counter Manchester United’s direct approach. This decision was made to bolster Sunderland’s physical presence on the field, as Le Bris believed Ballard’s physicality was essential to handle the pressure from the hosts.
Régis Le Bris said: “I’m disappointed, because I think we didn’t start well. We were aware of their threat, how they can be direct and threaten from the second balls. They created from this point, their right side was very strong with Mbuemo and Amad. We were aware of this and prepared for it, but sometimes the reality is different. For 30 minutes, we were not able to manage this part of the game and probably we were a little bit sloppy on the ball as well, so we were just not always at the level required.”
Despite the tactical adjustments, Sunderland’s performance remained below par, particularly in the first half. The team struggled to cope with the threats posed by Amad and Bryan Mbuemo on Manchester United’s right flank. Le Bris acknowledged that his side’s inability to manage these threats contributed significantly to their defeat.
Régis Le Bris said: “It’s a good lesson for us today, when we don’t start properly either individually or collectively, you can feel that you are really fragile. You concede chances and can’t express yourself with the ball. Even if Man Utd have struggled, they have always had the ability to create danger. We didn’t manage their strengths properly, so in this case you can’t expect anything.”
Le Bris emphasized the importance of maintaining perspective despite the loss, highlighting that his players have learned a valuable lesson about the consequences of not performing at their best. While Sunderland showed some improvement after the tactical shift, it was not enough to change the outcome of the match.
The defeat serves as a reminder of the challenges Sunderland faces in the Premier League, particularly when dealing with teams capable of exploiting defensive vulnerabilities. Le Bris remains committed to providing opportunities for players to adapt to the league’s demands, as evidenced by his decision to start Adingra and Bertrand Traoré, despite the setback.
